Philip Van Lanen, owner of Van Lanen Sharpening Service in Kennewick Washington

Hi, I’m Philip Van Lanen

I’m the owner and sharpener behind Van Lanen Sharpening Service. I started this business with a simple goal: help people get more life, better performance, and safer use out of the tools they depend on every day.

Before sharpening became my full-time work, I spent nearly 40 years as a dental technician. That kind of work teaches patience, precision, and attention to small details. Those same habits now guide how I sharpen knives, scissors, grooming shears, beauty shears, clipper blades, garden tools, and more.

Sharp tools matter. Dull tools waste time, cause frustration, and can even be dangerous. Whether you are a home cook, groomer, stylist, barber, restaurant owner, gardener, veterinarian, or someone who simply likes tools that work the way they should, my goal is to give you an edge you can trust.

Where Passion Meets Precision

Van Lanen Sharpening Service was built around precision, reliability, and practical service. I believe sharpening should be done correctly, not rushed, guessed at, or treated like every tool is the same.

Different tools require different methods. A kitchen knife is not sharpened the same way as a grooming shear. A beauty shear is not sharpened like a pair of household scissors. Clipper blades require different equipment than garden tools. Each tool is inspected and sharpened according to what it actually needs.

That attention to detail is one reason customers throughout Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, Walla Walla, Hermiston, Pendleton, Moses Lake, Ephrata, and Eastern Washington trust Van Lanen Precision Sharpening.

Professional Training and Certification

Van Lanen Sharpening Service is an ISSA-Certified Professional Sharpener with additional training in shear and scissor sharpening.

Professional sharpening requires more than owning a machine. It takes training, experience, judgment, and a willingness to stand behind the work. I continue to invest in training and professional equipment so customers receive dependable sharpening from someone who takes the craft seriously.

How Sharpening Works

1. Choose the Service That Works Best for You

  • Mobile Sharpening: We come to your home, business, salon, grooming shop, restaurant, or workplace.
  • 24/7 Drop-Off: Leave your tools at our Kennewick drop-off location anytime.
  • Mail-In Sharpening: Ship your tools to us, and we will sharpen and return them.

Mobile sharpening has a $125 minimum order.

2. We Inspect, Sharpen, and Test

Each tool is inspected before sharpening. We look for damage, wear, rust, loose parts, poor previous sharpening, or anything that may affect the final result. Then we sharpen using the appropriate method for that tool.

3. You Get Tools That Work Better

The goal is simple: tools that cut cleaner, work easier, and feel better to use. No more forcing dull knives, fighting with scissors, pulling hair with grooming tools, or struggling through jobs that should be easier.
